Right now, technology has changed almost every part of our daily lives, and it especially has affected the way we communicate with others. People can have conversations through text messages, social media, online calls, and many other platforms without having to see each other in person. These tools do in fact make communication faster and more convenient, but this also brings up an important question. Are we losing the art of real communication? Technology has definitely made it easier to be able to stay connected with others, but I believe it has made many people less comfortable with real life interactions and has definitely caused isolation between others.
One reason face to face communication is becoming less common and more harder to actually do is because people have become so used to talking through their phones. Instead of having a whole conversation with someone in person and spending time with others, people would rather send a text and leave it like that. Texting may be easier for others and seems like the quickest thing to do, it also allows people to think about what they want to say before actually responding which can make conversations feel easier. But it also takes away very important parts of communication like facial expressions and the tone of someone’s voice. Texting is definitely easier to do but sometimes a message could be misunderstood simply because the other people won’t be able to understand how it was meant to be sound.
Another issue is how much time people spend on social media. Today, it is normal to see groups of friends together while everyone is focused on their phones. This shows that even when people are physically together, they are not always fully paying attention to each other because they are distracted on their phones. Social media can make it feel like we are constantly connected to other people from having hundreds of online interactions, but it still does not always mean that social media can lead to strong personal relationships. Real true conversations mainly require attention, effort, and listening, which can sometimes be confusing on how people communicate with each other in real life and over text.
Technology is not always considered a bad thing. It helps people to stay in touch with their family, talk and make new friends, and be able to communicate with people who live far away and are not able to see them on a daily basis. For some people, being able to communicate online can help make it easier for people to be able to express themselves without being shy. The actual problem is not technology but how much time we spend on it. There should be a balance between communicating online and in person.
In conclusion, I do believe that technology is changing the way we communicate everyday, but that does not automatically mean that face to face communication has to completely disappear. Being able to look to understand someone’s emotions and having a genuine conversation is something that technology could never replace. Phones should not be considered more important than the people that are in front of us. Using technology should be used to stay connected with others but not completely take over someone’s life. In general, the most meaningful conversations happen when all technology is gone and having an actual one on one conversation.
